[This past week's show gets prefaced by a live review
of Braindance in Miami.]
You ever catch that creepy video for Aphex Twin's
"Come to Daddy" in which a gang of kids run amok in a
post-apocalyptic ghetto? Of course, you do. You never
forget those prepubescent punks?girls and boys?in
Richard D. James's masks terrorizing the grey, slimy
streets of London. Remember the part at the end where
they gather around some spooky yet familiar-looking
goblin who paternally opens its arms to them? This may
have been a warning sign. Because although the Aphex
Twin's whereabouts are unknown, some of his "children"
(Cylob, Ovuca, DMX Krew, and Bogdan Raczynski) are
currently loose in North America and they're calling
it a "Braindance."
And Braindance is right. I don't think I've ever seen
people stop dancing to pull up chairs to the
dancefloor, sit down, put their heads in their hands,
and study the music as if it were a piece of fine art
in some gallery.
Oh, wait. I'm getting ahead of myself. The Rephlex
tour stopped at the Polish American Club (of all the
places!) in Miami. Cylob opened with a deejay set that
explored much of the Rephlex catalogue. His tune
selection was...interesting, even sublime in certain
spots, but progressively, Chris Jeffs' set seemed to
derail further and further off-track?bad mixing gave
way to zero mixing, and for the last fifteen minutes
familiar dancefloor favorites played for a minute or
so only to be interrupted by a prerecorded robot
chant, "Disappoinment, disappointment..."
Ovuca followed Cylob's anti-dj set with a live
performance. Don't be fooled by the word "live,"
though. Okay, first let me explain the set-up: a
thick, red curtain obscured most of the stage. It
seemed a set-up more suiting a puppet show than a
night of electronica. So anyways, here we were
listening to this amazingly complicated yet melodic
electronica, but no one could be seen on the stage.
"Where is he?" "Do you see anybody up there?" Finally,
a friend poked his head around the side of the stage
to see Aleski Per?l? lying on the floor with a laptop.
Someone connected to the tour said the poor lad was
afflicted with jetlag. Um-kay.
DMX Krew followed. Krew? Try one skinny, white dude
from England on an ibook and a treated mic. Don't get
me wrong?Ed DMX rocked it all on his lonesome. People
danced! *gasp* The music? Definitely electro, or
better, electro booty ghetto funk. For one number, the
vocals consisted of nothing but "Them ass, those
titties." Straight to the point. I like it. Yeah, it's
kinda cheesy but in a nice nostalgic sort of way.
Okay, just when there were more people on the
dancefloor than at any other point in the night,
Bogdan Raczynski and his laptop came to piss all over
everyone's parade and it was magnificent. Never have I
heard such twisted electronica live. Sorry, the music
eludes description. At one point, a Looney Tunes
episode on a crack / crystal meth cocktail came to
mind. But the prankster only played for FIFTEEN
MINUTES!!! In spite of shouts like "poseur" and
"motherf*ucker" from the audience, my friend (xenlab
from the downtempo list) seemed rather satisfied,
"It's perfect. Stand in line. Fork over your cash.
Take the ride. Do the loop-da-loop once. Bang, you're
done."
In the spirit of Braindancin', Xenlab hosted Checked
by Science Fiction the following night. If you find
yourself in the area tonight, check it out: WPRK
